The idea for this book developed when Shelia Payton’s niece (Joi Michelle Payton) turned 13. Because Joi and her family lived in Minnesota and later California, Shelia had less face time with Joi than they would have living in the same city, and fewer chances to share life lessons without sounding like she was lecturing. While every individual navigates their own life, having more options is helpful. Essays in this book offer additional ways to deal with life’s challenges.

Drawing on her experiences, and wisdom learned by her generation and preceding generations, Shelia shares invaluable information for navigating life’s bumps in the road, developing your own identity, and being your authentic self in ways that honor your heritage. Examples in the book are as relevant today as they’ve ever been. To make it easier for readers to find help with situations in real time, essays are listed under subject headings (Being You, Taking Care of You, Dealing with People, Overcoming Challenges, Staying Focused, Achieving Success, Making a Difference).

Shelia hopes the insights gained by reading these essays will help the reader on their journey toward a fulfilling, impactful life that leaves a positive imprint on the world and inspires the reader to share what they’ve learned with loved ones, friends, and others who would find the essays helpful.
